Travel Diaries: Paris to Morocco By Bike

February 19, 2017

In the summer of 2014, two years after my first year long adventure from Paris to Melbourne by bike, I dusted off my loyal companion with two wheels once again. This time, I would be embarking on a 2 month solo trip, from Paris to Morocco.

Morocco was the perfect destination: accessible by bike from Paris, and a country I had been dreaming of visiting for a very long time, due to its close ties and history with France. I first spent three weeks crossing my beautiful country, then Spain, and finally took a boat for Nador, in the northeastern Morocco. From Malaga, I could see Africa across the water. Morocco, the destination I had been dreaming of, was now just a short boat ride away.

My first day on Moroccan soil, fresh from a 24 hour boat ride, I easily crossed 100 km through arid, desert landscapes, pushed along by a friendly wind on my back. A cyclist's best friend!

Once night fell, I arrived in a typical Moroccan village. I asked a family if I could plant my tent in their yard, and generously, they offered to let me sleep in their living room and even invited me to eat dinner with them! And so my warm welcome to Morocco began..

The rest of the days of my trip looked a little something like this: during the days, with the hot Moroccan sun beating down my back, I would ride through the deserts, the mountains, touristic villages, and remote villages. The locals always welcomed me with open arms. Because French is widely spoken, communication was easy, but I still managed to pick up a bit of Arabic, and even Berber, the language of the mountains!

After four weeks cycling, I finally made it to Fez, where Christine was there to join me. We loved getting lost in the maze of the Medina, discovering tiny, hidden streets, small shops filled to the brim, and of course, our very first Moroccan rugs...

Once back in Paris, the red sand of Morocco once again a dream, we promised ourselves we would return. Six months later, during a weekend in Chefchaouen, the story of Loom + Field began.
